چکیده

Some issues in quantitative genetics theory, other than molecular genetic analysis and utilisation, are reviewed. These include the development of models and methods for the analysis of longitudinal data, i.e. records continued or repeated over time, such as daily milk yield within and across lactation. The problems of identifying a range of alternative models and testing their fit are discussed. Consideration is given to the trade-off between long and short term response, where particular progress has been made in developing algorithms to compute effective population size and to optimise design of breeding programs for long-term response. Much of this work, including the utilisation of mutations, has been concentrated on selection for improvement of purebreds, and similar issues in relation to improvement of crossbreds are considered.

Functional genomics bridges the gap between quantitative genetics and molecular biology.

Deep characterization of molecular function of genetic variants in the human genome is becoming increasingly important for understanding genetic associations to disease and for learning to read the regulatory code of the genome. In this paper, I discuss how recent advances in both quantitative genetics and molecular biology have contributed to understanding functional effects of genetic variant...

The genotype-phenotype maps of systems biology and quantitative genetics: distinct and complementary.

The processes by which genetic variation in complex traits is generated and maintained in populations has for a long time been treated in abstract and statistical terms. As a consequence, quantitative genetics has provided limited insights into our understanding of the molecular bases of quantitative trait variation. With the developing technological and conceptual tools of systems biology, cel...

Advancing genetic theory and application by metabolic quantitative trait loci analysis.

This review describes recent advances in the analysis of metabolism using quantitative genetics. It focuses on how recent metabolic quantitative trait loci (QTL) studies enhance our understanding of the genetic architecture underlying naturally variable phenotypes and the impact of this fundamental research on agriculture, specifically crop breeding. In particular, the role of whole-genome dupl...

Quantitative genetics in the age of omics.

The use of natural variation in the genetic dissection of quantitative traits has a long-standing tradition. Recent advances in high-throughput technologies for the quantification of biological molecules have shifted the focus in quantitative genetics from single traits to comprehensive large-scale analyses. So-called omic technologies now enable geneticists to take a look in the black box that...

Terminology, concepts, and models in genetic epidemiology.

Genetic epidemiology brings together approaches and techniques developed in mathematical genetics and statistics, medical genetics, quantitative genetics, and epidemiology. In the 1980s, the focus was on the mapping and identification of genes where defects had large effects at the individual level. More recently, statistical and experimental advances have made possible to identify and characte...
